PBL IDEAS and PROJECTS- Glogster

Some ideas for #PBL and #TECHED

One of my favorite sites to use while doing project based learning or problem based learning is GLOGSTER:  This site free for individuals.  I recommend using the education settings on Glogster with your students because the content is more kid friendly.  You get a few free student accounts with each teacher account.  If you want more you'll have to pay.  The students love to play with this on their own so it's worth the money if you can afford it.  The cost is $39 per year for up to 30 accounts and $95 for up to 125 accounts.

Excellent example of what Glogster can do!

Some projects the students and I have worked on:

  • Science Integration, Government Affairs and Persuasive Writing- Research invasive species and create a GLOG as a persuasive essay project to convince your community to help you control the invasive species.  You are an expert conservation officer and it's your job to be able to have reasoning behind your poster.
  • Researching explorers and create a culmination timeline to show what you've learned.
  • Older student researching phonemes and creating an alphabet book for the Kindergarteners.  Pair up the students and let your presenters teach the students.  Some examples could be the sh- sound.  Find art, words, foods and movies related to the sound.
  • Create an Author study.  Each time you find a new Author have students add to the Glog.  Create a board to be referenced.  Create a QR Code for the librarian to hang up for the library.  Create a share circle to talk about genre.  Create a double bubble Thinking Map (@ConnieHamilton) to compare/contrast two authors for a recommendation bulletin board.

These kids are awesome!  I hope this video inspires you to act your best.  We are all victims of bullying.  Unfortunately many of us have also been a bully.  Whether its talking ill about someone, gossiping, jealousy, or physical and verbal violence.  The first part of the solution is taking action for our own behavior.

Join these students, one step at a time and "Take Pride" in yourself.

Kids and App Safety

As you know, technology is moving at the speed of light and unfortunately our children are leading the innovations and consumerism. It's scary to think that parents (me included) need to stay ahead of our children to prevent them from danger. Danger comes in all forms! One of the biggest dangers kids face is themselves. As children they feel invincible and don't take the precautions they need to stay out of harms way.

Great article written by Kristin Peaks "7 Dangerous Apps Parents Should Know About" Please read it.

My suggestions is to read the article, sit down with your child's device, see if any of these apps have been downloaded. Remember if you pull the main screen down from the top of the device (apple) an app search bar will appear. Do it this way so you don't miss it! If your child uses Android, you should clip the app icon, look for the magnifying glass and then search with it. If an app is hiding you'll be able to find it.

After looking for any of these apps you'll be able to sit with your child, ask them how they use the app. Start a discussion with them about safety. You may think they already know, but if your children are anything like mine, they might overlook some of these teachings. My children know, anytime, any hour, I may be inspecting their device!~

Augmented Reality

I showed my students the Guinness Book of World Records app!  This app is full of "come to life" augmented reality in 3-D.  After my demonstration kids came up to find information on their own!  They love it!

Teachers are even having fun with it in the workroom!

Leapsters

Learning with the Leapsters!  I love it when kids are engaged and learning!  I got a grant for 27 Leapsters with Pixar Pals (astronomy, ocean science, and simple machines) , Tangled (spelling, vocabulary, reading expression and reading skills), Globe Adventures (geography, culture and map skills) and Penguins of Madagascar (addition, subtraction, and logic & reasoning).

Feeling super lucky!
